Nanty Glo to Vintondale 7.1 miles Class Grad Size (Area/Volume) Scene/Poll Level II-III 42/105 Tiny
(47/78) B/B Topographic Maps: Nanty Glo, Vintondale County Maps: Cambria Description: Small stream paddlers may want to extend the trip 5 miles by putting in at Beula on the State Route 3034 Bridge above Nanty Glo. The first mile from Beula is continuous Class II and then the stream flattens to fast flowing to Nanty Glo. This section is very scenic as it passes through game lands. It also passes by some spoil piles, but overall the scenery gets a B rating. Below Nanty Glo the stream contains many Class II and Class III rapids. The most notable section begins below the State Route 3047 bridge following a loop in the stream. [Reported 1992] Difficulties: Several drops in the section below Nanty Glo will require scouting. Shuttle: Put in either at Nanty Glo or at the State Route 3034 bridge at Beula above Nanty Glo depending on your desire for small stream paddling. To get to the take-out go west on State Route 271. About 2.5 miles from the railroad crossing in Nanty Glo turn left onto State Route 3047, which parallels the stream for the entire length. The take-out is at a streamside park near the junction of the North Branch below Vintondale. Gauges: Josephine. This gauge further downstream on the Blacklick Creek at Josephine will probably read below 5.2 feet (2003 rating table). This corresponds to 2,000 cfs in the Blacklick. Normal Wet Period: No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is tiny, it should normally be runnable only after a heavy rain or during spring snowmelt. |
